It’s Showtime!

EngadgetHD had the news last week when DirecTV launched 21 new HD channels. Among them was the Smithsonian channel, which is now getting props for picture quality on the forums. (Great picture, some audio issues) Turns out (okay I knew a while ago) Motorola is providing the MPEG-4 AVC encoding system for Showtime’s Smithsonian HD content. This follows on the heels of the Starz and HBO announcements. Anyone see a trend? Not the Motorola part, although that’s important to me, the MPEG-4 part – major uptick among content providers in the last few months.

Note: Ben Drawbaugh has a post up today on the launch 11 more DirectTV HD channels.
