Things That Go Up


Both US mobile broadband usage and TV viewing on the Internet have soared. In two entirely different articles today I read that:

  1. Mobile broadband usage has gone up 154% in a year, and
  2. NBC.com measured more than half a billion video streams on the Web in virtually the same time span.

This begs the question: will the two trends merge to bring us significant growth in mobile TV?

Everything I’ve heard of the cost model for live broadcasting to mobile phones suggests that there’s little profit to be made in the endeavor. An all-you-can-eat cell phone service model would overload carriers with bandwidth demand, and consumers generally don’t want to pay for individual bits of live content on the go.

However, that doesn’t mean we won’t see more of the cache-n-carry model in the near future. Whether it’s transferred from your DVR or carried on a USB flash drive, why not catch up on a show or clips of The Daily Show on a mobile device while waiting in line at the DMV?
