March Madness Online and On Demand

As a rabid college basketball fan, it warms my heart to see March Madness covered everywhere. Since the early days when we were limited to whatever games the networks chose to broadcast, our options have grown substantially. Online, CBS streams all tournament games for free via a March Madness on Demand portal. (Now available on the iPhone and iPod Touch as well) On TV, more and more service providers have inked deals with the network to provide on-demand extras for basketball fans. As Multichannel News reports, 20 distributors already have ad-free NCAA content available showing highlights from great games of the past, with new highlights from this year’s tournament on the way.

A quick check of the Comcast on-demand guide shows that March Madness “Greatest Moments” videos are available in SD and HD. I found a great three-minute clip of the Duke/Kentucky game from 1992 with Laettner’s famous game-winning shot at the buzzer. Unfortunately, the HD coverage was seriously limited by the original quality of the footage, but the content of the segment was great. I’ve never seen more than the final shot of  that game before. In the on-demand video I got to see the last, nail-biting 30 seconds of play. A great warm-up for March Madness 2009.
