Further Proof of VOD Success

According to a recent study by the research firm Centris [PDF] consumer viewing of free VOD content nearly doubled from 2008 to 2009. And while the full Centris report isn’t freely available, Home Media Magazine goes on to report that the Centris study tallied 18 million households in 2009 accessing VOD content, up from 10 million in 2008. (Hat tip to EngadgetHD) Even better from a service provider perspective, two-thirds of households using free VOD services also opted to purchase one or more premium channels.

The evidence of video-on-demand progress continues to grow. In January we heard Magnus Global predict that VOD will reach nearly 66 million US households by 2015. In March we heard consumer backlash against retail set-tops without cable/telco VOD access. And here we are in April with another proof point of VOD’s appeal. No, it’s not an April Fool’s joke. It’ll still be true the other 364 days of the year as well. 🙂
