Pay-TV Revenue on the Rise

I can argue all I want that over-the-top (OTT) video isn’t going to kill off cable and telco TV services. But nothing drives the point home quite like a revenue projection chart. According to analyst firm Infonetics (via Fierce IPTV), global pay-TV revenues will top $250 billion in 2014, a jump of $60-$70 billion in five years.

Interestingly, analyst Jeff Heynen does make a point about the threat of OTT in his Infonetics report. However, despite his cautionary tone, he predicts growth in both revenue numbers and subscribers for cable, telco, and satellite TV providers between now and 2014, a forecast which seems to undermine any apparent threat. Perhaps the rosy outlook is because service providers will have effectively integrated OTT video into their delivery strategies by then? That wouldn’t be an unreasonable assumption, at least among North America’s largest operators.
