Avoiding IP Simulcast

Jeff Baumgartner has an article up today based on a conversation about IP video with David Grubb, CTO for the Motorola Home business. The full piece is worth a read, but one of the points Grubb makes is that he doesn’t believe full IP simulcast of pay-TV channels makes sense any time soon. In short, consumers are already getting this content at a very high quality, so just adding IP delivery is a lot of work for not enough pay-off. Instead, operators should focus in the short term on creating IP-like experiences. Consumers don’t care how they get their TV. They care about what that content looks like when they get it. From the article:

[Grubb] advocates that cable focus first on making the set-top navigation system more personalized and engaging, and just more Web-like. That includes better ways to navigate ever-growing video-on-demand (VoD) libraries and perhaps the addition of Internet-delivered content.
